How to Make an Image a Circle in Photoshop

Have you ever wanted to make an image into a circle in Photoshop? There are so many pro bloggers and websites that make pictures into perfect circles – but how do they do it?  Here’s the secret – it’s super easy! Below is a step-by-step tutorial on how to crop an image into a circle in Photoshop – Let’s start!

 

Step 1: Open your image in Photoshop


You should have only your image open, no other layers.

Step 2: Double click on the Background Layer and make it a Normal Layer


No renaming is necessary; you just want ‘Background’ and the lock to disappear – it should now say “Layer 0”

Step 3: Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool


Click on the “Marquee Tool”, then select “Elliptical Marquee”.

Step 4: Create a circle


Drag your mouse and create a circle.  If you hold “shift” while you drag your mouse, you will make a perfect circle.

Step 5: Inverse the Layer


Once you have created the desired circle size, go to the top toolbar and click Select > Inverse.

Step 6: Delete the Outer Layer


When you click inverse, a dashed box will appear around the whole image. Click Delete.

All that’s left is your circle image!

Step 7: Crop your Image


Go to the left side toolbar and click the “Crop Tool”.   Drag your mouse around your circle image to crop the desired amount.  Then, right-click the image and select “Crop”.

Step 8: Save as .PNG file


Save the image as a .png file using the drop-down menu selector. This will save the image with a transparent background (you can’t do this with JPEG files) so that you can keep your perfect circle, no matter what background you place it on!
